US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has sparked controversy, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims he was not consulted on the agreement. Trump declared on social media that both countries had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, yet Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would only comply if Russia ceased its strikes as well.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions over Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian oil facilities, which Washington had urged Kyiv to stop. Zelenskyy, however, maintained that any agreement should include reciprocal commitments from Russia, as Ukrainian energy sites, including a thermal power station in Kharkiv, remain under attack by Russian forces.
Further complicating the situation, Trump has proposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, arguing that it could lower fuel prices in the US. This decision has been met with criticism from Zelenskyy, who warned that it could bolster Russia’s capacity to continue its military operations.
The discord highlights growing tensions between the US and Ukraine over how to approach a resolution to the conflict. Reports suggest that Washington might consider economic incentives or military procurement arrangements to encourage both Kyiv and Moscow to agree to a ceasefire. Nevertheless, Ukraine insists its attacks on Russian oil facilities are crucial to undermining Moscow’s war efforts, while Russian bombardments persist across Ukrainian cities.
European leaders have voiced support for Ukraine’s stance and urged an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Despite Trump’s claims, there is no confirmed agreement from Russia on the proposed ceasefire terms, leaving the situation uncertain.
As the conflict continues, Zelenskyy has engaged with international leaders to strengthen backing for Ukraine and reiterated that leadership decisions in Ukraine should be left to its people. He expressed willingness to consider elections if Russia agreed to a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire, underscoring the need for lasting peace and security guarantees.
