US Inflation Hits 3.7%, Intensifying Economic Pressure on Republicans Before Elections

by admin477351

US inflation climbed to 3.7% in September from 3.4% in August, increasing economic pressure on the Trump administration and the Republican Party as the midterm elections approach. The rise in inflation is driven significantly by higher energy prices, which have become a major concern for American households.

According to government data, consumer prices increased by 0.6% month-on-month in September. Notably, gasoline prices surged by 34% compared to the previous year, while fuel oil prices saw a dramatic 74% increase. These rising costs are adding to household expenses just as winter approaches. Additionally, air travel costs jumped 22.4% year-on-year, further straining consumer budgets.

Core inflation, excluding food and energy prices, reached an annual rate of 2.6%. The ongoing US-Israel war involving Iran has exacerbated global energy prices, contributing to the heightened costs of gasoline and diesel. This situation has intensified concerns about household budgets and has weakened public confidence in the administration’s economic policies.

As the midterm elections near, economic issues are expected to play a pivotal role, with many voters expressing dissatisfaction over affordability and the rising cost of living. The Republicans, who control both the White House and Congress, face mounting pressure to demonstrate effective management of inflation and reassure voters about the state of the economy.

President Trump has attributed the rise in oil prices to Iran and regional instability, while defending his administration’s economic track record. However, the persistent inflation could complicate efforts to assuage voter concerns.

The Federal Reserve also faces challenges as it considers its monetary policy. Elevated prices could constrain the potential for interest-rate cuts, while higher borrowing costs may continue to impact mortgages, businesses, and consumers. The September inflation figures underscore the economic hurdles facing the United States as voters prepare to decide the control of Congress in the upcoming elections.
