The US Treasury Department has revealed that the US Mint is now producing a new commemorative $1 coin featuring former President Donald Trump. This release is part of the celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The coin is set to be available to the public this fall.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the coin is designed to honor the legacy of liberty and patriotism in America, celebrating the nation’s enduring commitment to freedom and its core values. The design, which received final approval earlier this year, has undergone some modifications since its original concept. Notably, the coin will feature a gold-colored finish, rather than being made from solid gold.
On the obverse side of the coin, a portrait of Trump is portrayed alongside the word “LIBERTY,” the years “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse side showcases the traditional bald eagle emblem from the Great Seal of the United States, accompanied by the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The announcement, however, has sparked criticism due to the fact that federal law generally restricts living presidents from being depicted on US currency. Despite this, officials from the Treasury Department assert that the secretary possesses the authority to approve commemorative coin issues under specific circumstances.
