US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to restart trilateral peace talks with the United States and Ukraine, as Washington seeks to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict. Witkoff’s appeal came during a meeting in St Petersburg, where he presented new proposals aimed at resolving the crisis and discussed potential steps toward a negotiated peace settlement. This meeting marked Witkoff’s ninth in-person discussion with Putin.
In the discussions, Putin indicated a willingness to collaborate with US President Donald Trump on other global issues, such as Iran’s nuclear program, and suggested a future meeting with Trump in China that might also include Chinese President Xi Jinping. These diplomatic exchanges underscore Washington’s renewed efforts to bring the involved parties back to the negotiating table, even as substantial obstacles remain to achieving a mutually acceptable agreement.
Prior to his meeting with Putin, Witkoff held talks in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as leaders from Finland, Norway, and representatives from Europe and NATO. These discussions were aimed at developing a coordinated approach to negotiations with Russia and identifying elements that could form the basis of a comprehensive peace agreement. Key issues addressed included security guarantees for Ukraine, postwar economic recovery, and the future of European security arrangements.
Zelenskyy has expressed a desire for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin to tackle the primary barriers to ending the war. However, the Kremlin insists that any direct talks between Putin and Zelenskyy would require thorough preparation to ensure substantial progress.
The recent diplomatic engagements highlight the ongoing challenges but also the persistent efforts by the United States to mediate peace talks. While the path to a resolution remains fraught with difficulties, these meetings suggest a continued commitment to exploring diplomatic avenues to end the conflict. The outcome of these discussions remains uncertain, as each side navigates the complex geopolitical landscape.
