Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has voiced optimism about finding a peaceful resolution with the United States regarding Greenland and the Arctic region. Her comments came after attending the European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, where she acknowledged the mounting pressure Greenland has faced and expressed gratitude to European partners for their backing.

Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s desire to enhance collaboration with the United States in areas of security and defense, particularly concerning Greenland. Discussions are ongoing within a high-level working group that focuses on Greenland, and while she noted it was premature to draw definitive conclusions, Frederiksen remained hopeful about making progress.

Moreover, she underscored the increasing cooperation among European and transatlantic allies concerning Arctic security. As part of this effort, several allied nations are conducting military exercises in Greenland, reflecting a broader European commitment to securing the strategically significant Arctic region.

The European Arctic Summit, which took place on September 13-14, aimed to foster a unified European approach to the Arctic amid its rising strategic and geopolitical significance. Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been at the center of tensions due to US President Donald Trump’s interest in bringing it under American control, a stance that has caused friction between Washington, Copenhagen, and other European allies.
