The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) in Traverse City, Michigan, is set to enhance its energy resilience significantly, thanks to a newly approved 1.15 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system. With final funding from the U.S. Department of Energy secured, this advancement will enable the conservancy to better utilize renewable energy generated by its existing 185 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic system, storing electricity for use when it’s most needed.
This development is a part of a broader initiative supported by Congressionally Directed Spending and marks a considerable step forward in integrating sustainable energy technologies at GTRLC’s headquarters. The project will employ Advanced Battery Concepts’ (ABC) innovative GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology, a system noted for using significantly less lead than conventional batteries while maintaining essential safety and recyclability features. This technology will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures.
By transitioning to this advanced storage system, GTRLC will enhance its capacity to manage energy needs more efficiently, reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. This project underscores Michigan’s pivotal role in the domestic energy storage supply chain, with the GreenSeal® batteries both developed and manufactured within the state.
With the financial and governmental backing in place, the project has moved into the procurement and manufacturing phase. Installation and commissioning of the new energy storage system are anticipated to be completed by the second quarter of 2027, positioning GTRLC at the forefront of renewable energy utilization and storage.
