In a significant step toward enhancing the environmental and economic resilience of the Gulf Coast, the Gulf of America Alliance has unveiled 20 projects under its Gulf Star Program. These initiatives, spanning across Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, and Gulfwide efforts, aim to tackle vital issues like habitat restoration, coastal resilience, water quality, and environmental education. By fostering public-private cooperation, this program is designed to bolster healthier ecosystems and fortify local communities throughout the Gulf region, promising long-term benefits for both the environment and the economy.

The Gulf Star Program thrives on a public-private partnership model, drawing funds from both government bodies and private-sector players to focus on priorities set by the five Gulf states. Beyond financial backing, the program aims to ease common hurdles faced by smaller organizations and communities, such as administrative complexities and funding match requirements. The Gulf of America Alliance collaborates with over 165 entities, spanning government agencies, academic institutions, industries, local communities, and nonprofit organizations. Collectively, these partners concentrate on key areas like coastal resilience, habitat conservation, marine debris, education, wildlife, fisheries, and water resource management.

The newly funded projects encompass a diverse array of conservation and community efforts. Among them are initiatives to expand a native plant producer network in Alabama schools, boost hatching success for ground-nesting shorebirds in Louisiana, manage wetland ponds to support Whooping Cranes in Texas, and develop new methods for the early detection of Vibrio bacteria throughout the Gulf. Additional efforts include marsh restoration in Texas and Louisiana, marine debris education in Florida, regional sediment resource inventories, youth ambassador programs, coastal data-sharing ventures, studies on the northward shift of tropical species, living shoreline design and construction, pollinator habitat enhancements along pipeline rights-of-way in Mississippi, community resilience assessments in Alabama, and comprehensive resilience planning across all five Gulf states.

Notable supporters of the 2026 Gulf Star Program include 1PointFive, Williams, Sempra Infrastructure, the National Academies’ Gulf Research Program, Shell, Motiva Enterprises, Chevron, Alabama Power, Freeport McMoRan, Genesis Energy, Valero, Clean Gulf Associates, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the five Gulf states. Their combined efforts are driving initiatives that lead to healthier beaches, cleaner waters, productive ecosystems, and robust coastal economies.
