The Sunset Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea is gearing up to commemorate a significant milestone with a community celebration scheduled for October 25, 2026. This event marks the beginning of the ‘Century of Creativity’ campaign, a five-year celebration that highlights the 100th anniversary of the original opening of Sunset School. The festivities will also set the stage for another landmark celebration in 2031, which will mark the centennial of the historic theater auditorium’s opening.

The celebration on October 25 will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. and promises a diverse array of activities and performances. Attendees can enjoy live performances from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., both within the historic 718-seat theater and on the outdoor terrace. The event will feature a rich lineup of cultural organizations and performers including the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society, Chamber Music Monterey Bay, Youth Music Monterey, Carmel High School Chamber Singers, and Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre/TDC.

In addition to performances, the celebration will present a variety of community art and historical activities. Central to this is the Sunset Legacy Wall, a communal art project where participants are invited to share artwork, memories, and messages reflecting the role of the Sunset Center in the community. Families can also engage in creative activities such as rock painting. Throughout the campus, there will be live art demonstrations, music, photography programs, oral-history collection, wellness activities, and guided tours of the historic property. An archival exhibition will be on display, charting the Sunset Center’s evolution from a school campus to a regional cultural hub.

The event will see participation from local organizations such as the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, The Carmel Foundation, Carmel Youth Center, Carmel Residents Association, and Carmel Woman’s Club. Guests can enjoy complimentary refreshments, and for those wanting more, Sunset Center concessions will offer a selection of food and beverages for purchase. The entire celebration is open to the public free of charge, inviting everyone to partake in the festivities and reflect on the Sunset Center’s lasting impact on the Monterey Peninsula community.
